Gold filled jewellery has a layer of karat gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core, usually brass. It is generally more durable than plated jewellery and is often marked with a fraction showing the proportion of gold layer by weight.

Rolled gold is made in a similar way to gold filled, by bonding gold sheet to a base metal. The layer is often thinner. Many Australian, British and European pieces use “rolled gold” wording rather than GF.

HGP marks indicate a gold plating layer that is heavier than standard plating. There is no single universal standard for the thickness, so these items are assessed individually.

Pocket watch cases, wristwatch cases and expanding bands. Older cases are often marked on the inside of the back with “Gold Filled”, “Rolled Gold” or a guarantee period such as “Warranted 20 Years”.

Chains, bracelets, bangles and anklets in any condition, including broken or tangled pieces. Marks are usually found on the clasp, jump ring or a small tag near the clasp.

Signet rings, dress rings and bands. Marks are usually stamped inside the band. Stones and settings are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Bar brooches, sweetheart pins, tie pins and cufflinks. Look for marks on the back plate, pin stem or near the catch.

Lockets, pendants, charms and bails. Remove any photographs or keepsakes before sending — we cannot guarantee their return once items are processed.

Older jewellery from deceased estates, collections and inheritances. Many vintage pieces are unmarked or worn — send photos and we can advise whether an evaluation is worthwhile.
